Buying a hot tub or a spa pool is a big decision. Get the sizing wrong and it’ll either feel cramped or cost more to run than it needs to.

Why Size Matters More Than You Think

The right size hot tub isn’t always the biggest one you can fit. It’s the one that matches how you’ll actually use it — how many people, how often, where it’s going, and what it’ll cost to run week to week.

Moji offers three sizes: the Mini, Midi, and Maxi. Here’s how to choose:

1. How Many People Will Use It?

Think about your most common use case — not the rare Christmas gathering.

ModelIdeal For
Moji Mini1-3 people. Couples, solo relaxation and small households.
Moji Midi4-6 people. The most popular size for New Zealand family homes.
Moji Maxi8-10 people. Families with older children or those who enjoy regular entertaining.

A common mistake: buying too large. An oversized tub costs more to heat, uses more chemicals, and takes longer to reach temperature.

2. Where Is It Going?

Before you commit to a size, measure your space:

  • Gate width and access path — Moji tubs are delivered whole, check the delivery path, if in doubt contact us to discuss installation
  • Deck load-bearing capacity — a full hot tub is heavy; consult a builder if placing on a deck
  • Distance from the house — closer is more convenient in winter
  • Privacy, sun and shade — afternoon sun is great in winter; shade helps in summer

3. Energy Use: What Will It Cost to Run?

New Zealand hot tubs typically cost $30–$80/month in electricity, depending on:

  • Tub volume — larger = more to heat
  • Insulation quality — Moji tubs are designed for NZ conditions
  • Your local climate — colder winters = harder-working heater
  • How often you top up with cold water

Tip: Set to 36–37°C when not in use and bump it up before you soak. Modern tubs reheat quickly.

The Moji Midi also has the option of upgrading to a 20 Amp power supply which allows the tub to heat up quicker.

4. Think Long Term

  • Kids growing up — if they’re young now, they’ll want in as teenagers. A Midi or Maxi gives you more long-term use
  • Ageing and accessibility — step access and entry height matter more over time
  • Resale — a well-maintained cedar tub from Moji looks stunning in property listing photos and adds to the value of your home
